Ask about our 45 day trial offer PUBLIC NOTICE THAT DRINKING WATER VIOLATIONS HAVE OCCURRED The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has been delegated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency the responsibility to administer and enforce the provisions of the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act in South Dakota.

The purpose of the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act is to ensure that safe drinking water is available to all users of public water supply systems in the United States. The Federal Safe Drinking Water Act requires that all customers of a public water supply system have the right to know what problems are being faced by the water systems they use. Therefore, a system must notify its customers when drinking water quality standards are not met or when testing is not performed. Many public water systems provide this notice when problems have been identified. Other systems do not provide this notice, even after being requested to do so.

The customers of these systems may be unaware of the problems faced by their water systems. During March, 1994, those public water supply systems identified below failed to provide to the Department a copy of the required public notice concerning their violations of the Federal Drinking Water Act. In order to ensure that the public is aware of these problems, the Safe Drinking Water Act allows the Department to publish informational public notices when individual systems fail to do so. That is the purpose of this notice. FAILURE TO MONITOR FOR BACTERIA One of the standards is the monthly measurement of bacteria in drinking water.

The State of South Dakota and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) set drinking water standards. They have determined that the presence of total coliform is a health concern. Total coliform are common in the environment and are generally not harmful themselves. However, the presence of these bacteria in drinking water is generally the result of a problem with water treatment or the pipes that distribute water.

Total coliform indicate that the water may be contaminated with disease causing organisms. By failing to monitor for the presence of total coliform, it is unknown whether the water supply is contaminated. The following system(s) failed to have the proper number of repeat microbiological sample(s) analyzed during January, 1994: Border Club-Long Lake Lewie's Burger Brews-Lead Cafe-Lebanon Margie's Dinner Club-Spearfish Gaslight Rockerville Mountain Creek Lodge-Deadwood G-Bob's-Hill City Sodak Park Lake Association-Wilmot Golden Meadows-Black Hawk Francis -Canistota St. Onge Livestock Cafe Highmore Victor Supper Club-Rosholt Lake Byron Lodge-Huron Wasta The Department of Environment and Natural Resources recommends that users and customers of the drinking water systems identified above contact the owners and operators of these water systems to ask what corrective actions are being taken.
