Finding trans folks in Edmonton can be tricky. The city doesn’t have a defined LGBTQ+ area so the scene is more spread out.
But don’t get the wrong idea – the community here isn’t small by any means.
In fact, you might bump into TG individuals just walking down the street.
But we’re not here to talk about chance encounters, instead, I’m here to offer something more concrete.
After trying out a bunch of places, I’ve nailed down the best ways to connect with the trans folks around here.

1. Bars and Clubs
Edmonton is known for a lot of things but unfortunately…a good LGBTQ+ nightlife isn’t one of them.
However, the culture is still there and you can meet a large trans population near Whyte Avenue and the university area.
Other than that there’s only one gay club in Edmonton called Evolution Wonderlounge.
It’s the only LGBTQ+ bar in the city, it’s full of queer and trans folks on most nights.
And as you can see in the video, it has a very casual and inviting atmosphere…
Aside from that, some communities do bar takeovers like Fruit Loops every other month.
Their parties are big and often sold out and you’re almost guaranteed to meet trans folks in them.
2. Community Centers and Organizations
When looking to connect with the trans and broader LGBT community in Edmonton, there are a few key spots and organizations that stand out.
First up, the Pride Centre of Edmonton is a great starting point. Tucked right behind MacEwan University it’s a popular spot for young trans individuals, especially during the daytime.
Another valuable resource is the PFLAG Edmonton chapter. They hold meetings on the last Wednesday and the second Saturday of every month.
For specific details about the venue and times, it’s best to send them a message on their page. They’re usually prompt and helpful with information.
Don’t forget about the Edmonton Pride organization either. Besides their annual Pride Festival, they occasionally host various other events so keep an eye on their calendar.
3. Trans Dating Sites
Given the lack of nightlife options in Edmonton, it’s only natural that trans people resort to online dating sites.
There’s a bunch of apps out there, and it comes down to what kind of relationship you’re after.
For me, OkCupid is a winner every time. It’s like a magnet for the trans community and a great place for making new friends, no matter where you are.
The crowd there tends to be a bit more mature, and you’ll even find many progressive cis folks who are totally cool with you being trans.
Just a heads-up, though – most of its users are in it for the long haul, looking for serious stuff.
If you’re looking for something more laid-back, Grindr is the way to go. It’s got a good mix of trans and cis users, but it’s mostly used for hookups.
The good part? People are upfront about what they want, so no beating around the bush.
4. Online Groups and Pages
Edmonton’s got a bunch of online communities that are awesome for meeting trans folks and finding out about cool events.
Starting off, there’s the Trans & Nonbinary Pals YEG group on Facebook.
This group was born out of a need for a space where trans and nonbinary folks could come together.
It’s all about socializing, sharing advice, and supporting each other.
Then, there’s the Edmonton 2SLGBTQIA+ Community group, where they’re all about bringing together everyone under the rainbow to make new friends.
For meeting up in person, Pride Corner is a cool place. It’s at Whyte Avenue and 104th Street.
During summer, people hang out there every Friday night to celebrate being themselves.
The timings may change during winter so it’s always a good idea to check their Instagram page for updates.
The LGBTQ group on Meetup is very active. They have over 2,000 members and often set up social events, some just for trans folks. Keep an eye on their events!
5. Trans Friendly Gyms
This city has some great LGBT+ friendly spaces that are perfect if you’re into staying fit and active.
Action Potential Fitness is a top pick if you’re looking for a trans-friendly gym in Edmonton.
The trainers there are super welcoming, and the whole vibe of the place is about inclusion.
Another great option is the YMCA gyms. They’re known for being LGBT+ friendly.
I’ve got friends who work there, and they tell me the staff is pretty diverse, with many from the community itself. They have zero tolerance for transphobia.
And if you’re into swimming, check out the Making Waves Aquatics Club. But they meet up twice a week for swim sessions and water polo.
The workouts are intense and great for cardio. It’s a fun way to stay fit and meet some folks from the LGBT+ community.
What It’s Like to Be Transgender in Edmonton
Edmonton is probably the best city in Alberta to be trans, but that’s not to say it’s perfect. Around the university and along Whyte Avenue, things are generally cool.
The Oliver neighborhood is another good area. We don’t exactly have a designated ‘gayborhood’ in Edmonton, but if we did, Oliver would be it.
Downtown is alright too; that’s where you’ll find the only LGBTQ+ bar.
Generally speaking, Edmonton has this laid-back attitude towards different identities.
It’s not like there’s a big celebration for coming out trans, but there’s also not a lot of negativity.
You might get looked at twice if you’re standing out, but the chances of someone actually saying or doing something negative are pretty slim.
