AS Roma 2000/01 - Capello's 3-4-1-2 (2024)

Players, PI & PPM

Ok so time to see who i can use to make this system work, and what i might add in the way of PI. Again my approach here is to start relatively simple with few instructions and tweak based on what i see in matches.

Keeper

Wojciech Szczesny

AS Roma 2000/01 - Capello's 3-4-1-2 (1)

Not a world class keeper but he will do for now.

PI - Roll it out, Distribute to Centre Backs, Distribute Quicker, Shorter passing

I want him to keep his distribution simple and short. With 3 DCs it makes perfect sense to roll it out to them and shorter passing stops him lumping goal kicks

PPM - None

DRC

Antonio Rudiger

AS Roma 2000/01 - Capello's 3-4-1-2 (2)

Loannee who has a few holes in his game but natural right sided, just about good enough to start after i sold Manolas to get funds for a striker

PI - Close down more

As an outer "stopper" type, i want him to really close down in the way i saw Roma do in the videos and other clips. also this might encourage him to move out wide to put in a tackle when the CWB is upfield

PPM - Marks Opponents Tightly, Dives into tackles

PPMs should compliment what i want this guy to do, although combined with the PI he might be over aggressive. One to watch

DC

Leandro Castan

AS Roma 2000/01 - Capello's 3-4-1-2 (3)

Our central "spare" man. Left sided, which might mean i end up swapping him with Martins Indi, if the PPMs cause an inbalance. He is also arguably a bit similar to Samuel from the Roma team in his attributes and left sidedness

PI - None

Nothing fancy wanted, just do the job of a spare DC

PPM - Gets Forward whenever possible, Marks Opponents Tightly, Avoids Using Weaker Foot, Runs With Ball Often

Erm, interesting set there for a DC! The marks tightly i am happy with, will need to keep an eye out for the attacking type ones causing me an issue in my system.

DLC

Bruno Martins Indi

AS Roma 2000/01 - Capello's 3-4-1-2 (4)

Brought in from Porto as we are very short in this position, and Chelski offered £20m for Manolas which i needed to fund a striker. He is a nice left sided option and decent enough quality.

PI - Close Down More

Same reason as his counterpart on the other side.

PPM -None

Nice and simple here. The PPM balance and attribute balance might actually lead me to put Martins in the middle and move Castan out to the left in due course

CWB(a)

Alessandro Florenzi

AS Roma 2000/01 - Capello's 3-4-1-2 (5)

I remember this guy as an amazing AMC last year.....but he has been converted to play some right back for Roma IRL, and has PPMs which really compliment this role in my team. Also Cafu was one of the best players in the team, and he fits that description too

PI - None

The role has plenty inbuild PI already, so not adding anything

PPM - Runs With The Ball Down Right, Moves Into Channels, Gets Forward Whenever Possible, Tries First Time Shots

The first and third are perfect for this role in the team. The channels could add an interesting aspect. Tries first time shots also might not be a bad thing, as long switches of play can find him in a very advanced position near the box.

WB(s)

Lucas Digne

AS Roma 2000/01 - Capello's 3-4-1-2 (6)

Loanee from PSG who is another nice part of the squad. Not disimilar to how i see Candela - Good going forward but not on the level of the player on the right, and reasonably good defensively.

PI - - None

Interestingly this is an error on my part. I thought the role had loads built in by default, but i was looking at WB(a) which does whilst the support role does not. I might need to add some here, but let me see how it looks on the pitch

PPM - Gets into opposition area

An interesting one. I did mention Candela scored the odd goal for Roma in 2000/01 so maybe he can replicate it.

MCR

Daniele De Rossi

AS Roma 2000/01 - Capello's 3-4-1-2 (7)

Still a monster of a player if used right. His great positioning and anticipation are why he sits in the right slot not the left - more chance of getting across to cover for Florenzi

PI - Fewer Risky Passes

I want my 2 guys in the middle to keep it simple and feed the Treq and/or wingbacks. I might need to add "shoot less often" for this player but have not done so yet.

PPM - Shoots From Distance, Dictates Tempo, Stays Back At All Times, Tries Long Range Passes, Likes to Switch Ball To Other Flank

Quite a selection! The shooting one is a pain but should be nullified a bit by him rarely being a position to shoot. Like the stays back, and the long passes and switching is ideal for a team with wingbacks. Those 2 PPMs might actually suggest i could move him to MCL in order to seek out Florenzi with those long switches. Will keep an eye on it.

MCL

Radja Nainggolan

AS Roma 2000/01 - Capello's 3-4-1-2 (8)

A good hardman to have in the middle, Strootman is working back to fitness and will become an option here, but he is quite attack minded which could cause me a balance issue.

PI - Fewer Risky Passes

Same reason as De Rossi

PPM - Shoots From Distance, Marks Opponents Tightly, Dives Into Tackles

Again could do without the shooting one, but the other two are a nice match for how i saw Tommassi play - Really aggressive.

Treq

Miralem Pjanic

AS Roma 2000/01 - Capello's 3-4-1-2 (9)

Probably not someone considered a Treq IRL, and has often played deeper, but i love his balance of attributes and PPMs in this role so going to try and make it work.

PI - None

The role comes with plenty built in, and i want to let him and his PPMs do their thing initially before giving him any more direction

PPM - Runs With The Ball Through Centre, Tries Killer Balls, Plays One-Twos, Dictates Tempo, Hits Free Kicks With Power

Love this set of PPMs. He will dribble, he will make incisive passes, do link up play.........just what i want in theory from a treq.

Poacher

Edin Dzeko

AS Roma 2000/01 - Capello's 3-4-1-2 (10)

I doubt many people have ever compared Dzeko to Batistuta.....but we have to work with what we have! He can be a goalscorer and also a bit of a physical presence. Good penalty box instincts

PI - None

Going to see how this plays out before adding anything to it, still not 100% that this is the role i want

PPM - Plays With Back To Goal, Plays One-Twos, Stops Play

Hmmm.....this could be an example here PPMs dont allow the role to play out as i wish. The first and last are hardly what you want in a Poacher, but Dzeko has a transfer agreed to us already so i am stuck for him. he doesnt have the right work ethic to play the other striker role it feels, so will need to see how this shakes out.

DLF(S)

Lucas Pratto

AS Roma 2000/01 - Capello's 3-4-1-2 (11)

Was not my first choice signing for this role (we have no one suitable in the starting squad). I wanted Gamiero, but he was too expensive and went to Arsenal. Pratto works hard and has good team work, is also a good physical presence which was also true of Delvecchio. Pretty good all round player and PPMs should compliment this role.

PI - Move Into Channels

Want to see him dropping off and into wider areas, hoping this well help.

PPM - Moves Into Channels, Comes Deep To Get Ball, Knocks Ball Past Opponent

Nice and complimentary to the role, in particular the second one which should see him drop closer to the midfield at times.

Ok so that is it with the Players, PI and PPM. Now to play some games and see how badly it all falls apart....... AS Roma 2000/01 - Capello's 3-4-1-2 (12)
